Globalvia has calculated its Carbon Footprint for the second year in a row and the results are very positive.

The total Greenhouse Gas Emissions caused directly or indirectly by Globalvia, which is how the Carbon Footprint is defined, were calculated for the first time in 2015. The Company took the initiative to do so not only because of its awareness of and concern for climate change and global warming but also because its shareholders were calling for it.

Globalvia calculated its Carbon Footprint again in 2017 using the 2016 data as a reference. On both occasions it considered both Scope 1 and 2 emissions. These scopes refer to direct emissions (1) which are the Greenhouse Effect Gases emitted by the Organisation directly, e.g., by using fossil fuels to operate the organisation’s vehicles or machinery; and indirect emissions (2) which are the Greenhouse Effect Gases emitted by the producer of the energy used by the Organisation.

On this occasion, Globalvia managed to significantly reduce its Greenhouse Gas Emissions compared to the previous year.  This was primarily due to the fact that in 2016 all of the power supplied to the Group’s Spanish concessionaires was 100% renewable energy.  Thus, highways saw a 23% reduction while for railways it was 92%.

With the results now available, Globalvia will continue its strategy of reducing emissions and defining more sustainable practices and saving initiatives.
