TRAM celebrates its tenth birthday
09-04-2014

Ten
years after overcoming the initial controversy surrounding its return, the TRAM
has become a modern and quality alternative to provide mobility for many
members of the public, becoming their usual means of transport. This is shown
by the more than 200 million passengers it has carried during these years,
faithful users who also rate its service highly. The latest survey by the ASTM
(EMEF) shows that the TRAM is still the highest-rated form of public transport,
scoring 7.5. The company’s satisfaction surveys show that uses value the
tramway’s accessibility, comfort, safety and speed most highly, all above 7.

With 29
km and six lines, the tramway is a means of transport that is fully integrated
into public mobility in the Barcelona metropolitan region and for a year now,
double trams have started to run at weekends and during special events such as
football games and concerts, when the demand requires them.

Innovation
has been a constant concern in TRAM, which has undertaken projects such as
Digirail, based on a bidirectional communications system that uses Wi-Fi
technology to connect trams with the control centre.

NEW
CHALLENGES

. Install
new monitoring devices to measure the power consumption of each tram, to apply
an efficient driving plan.

. Improve
the security systems, especially on the Trambesòs, by installing new cameras on
the line and inside trams, as already exist in the Trambaix system.

. New,
efficient, lighting systems.

. Lighting
and heating in the depots.

. Renew
the passengers information in stops and inside trams.

. Renew
the system with which the control centres monitor all operations and
communicate with the trams.

. Adapt
the T -Movilidad ticket cancelling and sale systems to the contact-free payment
system.
